The towns and villages of France are many in number, and without some guidance, or good fortune, the likelihood exists that many of them will be overlooked. Here is a selection of cities, towns and villages, beyond the departmental centres, that have raised a tremor of excitement with the author on making their discovery. Many, of course, are evident and well-known, but more than a few will bring pleasant surprises, and make the effort of finding them well worthwhile.
