Hidden high on the Causse du Larzac on the Larzac plateau, the tiny fortified town of La Couvertoirade was formerly owned by the Knights Templar.
By the late 19th century, the population was barely 350 souls; today it is a popular setting for weavers and other artisans, especially those working in enamel and pottery.
The village has strongly built houses, very typical of the wider region, many with external stairways leading to the main floor, many dating from the 17th century. Quite simply, it is a delight to explore.
